Marlpool Infant School

PSHE and RSE

Our shared learning experiences provide the children with the knowledge, understanding and skills to become responsible and effective members of the community both locally and internationally. We want our children to become confident citizens who value themselves and others, make informed choices and can see and accept different points of view.

The children’s personal and social development is of utmost importance and runs through all that we do. We believe that if our children are happy, feel valued and belong they can achieve and REACH their full potential, being the very best that they can be.

We aim to promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive taught programme of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education that gives children the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live a healthy, safe, productive and active life both for now and in the future.

The Department for Education had planned to introduce compulsory Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) from September 2020 for all primary schools. Due to the impact of Covid-19, this is now required to be implements from September 2021.

The aim of RSE is to give young people the information they need to help them develop healthy, nurturing relationships of all kinds, not just intimate relationships. It should enable them to know what a healthy relationship looks like and what makes a good friend, a good colleague and a successful marriage or other type of committed relationship. As a Federation, we would always want to deliver a curriculum which has the support of the vast majority, if not all, parents. Please use the links below to view the school’s consultation presentation and RSE policy. Links to the online consultation form will be emailed to all parents and carers.

 Scheme of Work

As a Federation we use the PSHE Association accredited programme called 1Decision.

The programme has been updated to meet all new requirements for teaching both PSHE and RSE. As a spiral curriculum, children will revisit key themes several times as they move through the school. Each year they will revisit prior learning and build on this with new knowledge and skills. This enables the children to gain a deeper understanding of each aspect covered and prepared them for future learning at secondary school as well as for life outside of school.

1Decision follows the key themes of

  • Keeping/ staying safe
  • Keeping/ staying healthy
  • Relationships
  • Being responsible
  • Feelings and emotions
  • Computer safety
  • A world without judgement
